International Angelman Day takes place annually on February 15 and raises awareness of Angelman syndrome worldwide. This is a rare neurogenetic disorder caused by changes in chromosome 15. The date of the awareness day was deliberately chosen for its symbolic significance. The international observance was first held in 2013. Since then, well-known buildings and landmarks around the world have been illuminated in blue to raise awareness and visibility for the condition. The goal of the event is to educate the public about typical symptoms such as severe developmental delays, absent or severely limited spoken language, and other challenges in the daily lives of those affected. At the same time, it aims to support research and promote communication and networking among affected families.
By illuminating the hospital building in blue, GPR Klinikum aims to show solidarity and contribute to public awareness.
“As a health and care center, it is important to us to raise awareness of rare diseases and support affected families. The blue lighting of our clinic on International Angelman Day symbolizes awareness, compassion, and social responsibility,” says Achim Neyer, Managing Director of the GPR Health and Care Center in Rüsselsheim.
