Interdisciplinary intensive care medicine

In the interdisciplinary intensive care unit, patients receive round-the-clock care provided jointly by physicians from the Department of Anesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine, and Perioperative Pain Management and the internal medicine departments. Medical supervision is jointly provided by the chief physicians of Anesthesiology, PD Dr. med. Gerd Albuszies, MBA, and the Second Department of Internal Medicine, PD Dr. med. Oliver Koeth.

Nursing care is provided by a dedicated team of specialized nurses and healthcare professionals. Patients also receive support from physical therapists, speech therapists, and, if needed, pastoral care.

Focal points of treatment

Range of Treatments

Our ward can accommodate twelve intensive care (ITS) and eight intermediate care (IMC) patients at the same time. Using state-of-the-art equipment and organ replacement therapies (ventilation, circulatory support, renal replacement therapy), critically ill patients can be stabilized and treated.

We utilize all diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of modern intensive care medicine:

  • Invasive and non-invasive ventilation strategies
  • Advanced hemodynamic monitoring
  • Acute dialysis and hemodiafiltration
  • Cardioversion and temporary pacemaker therapy
  • Infusion and transfusion therapy, artificial nutrition procedures
  • Pharmacological thrombolytic therapy
  • Primary and secondary toxin elimination in cases of poisoning

Anesthesiological and Surgical Intensive Care Medicine

Anesthesiological care is primarily provided to patients following surgery (and in some cases prior to it). Another focus is the treatment of severely injured patients following an accident. The primary focus is on monitoring and maintaining the normal function of the heart, lungs, and kidneys.

Internal Medicine Intensive Care

In addition to the focus on diseases of the cardiovascular system, the internal medicine department treats all complex internal medical conditions, such as pulmonary and gastrointestinal diseases. Here, too, the monitoring and maintenance of organ function are central.

Through interdisciplinary collaboration across specialties and professional groups, as well as daily rounds by the attending specialist departments, our patients always receive optimal, personalized care.

Facilities in our Intensive Care Unit

  • 12 intensive care beds with modern ventilators
  • 8 intermediate care monitoring beds

  • Advanced hemodynamic monitoring (PICCO, PA catheter, LIMON)
  • Transvenous / transcutaneous pacemaker therapy
