Oncoplastic Breast Surgery in Breast-Conserving Therapy

In many cases, a breast can only be preserved if oncoplastic procedures are performed directly during tumor surgery. These procedures combine oncological safety with plastic surgery techniques to preserve a harmonious breast shape. These include:

• Breast-reducing techniques (tumor-adapted reduction procedures) to balance out volume differences
• Tissue repositioning within the breast (glandular flap procedures) to correct defects and maintain a natural contour

Breast reconstruction following complete mastectomy

If a mastectomy is necessary, immediate or delayed reconstruction is an option. The decision depends on various factors, such as the need for radiation therapy, skin condition, and the patient’s individual preferences.

Immediate reconstruction

Breast reconstruction is performed immediately following the tumor surgery. This method offers the advantage of better preserving the natural breast shape, particularly in cases of skin-sparing or nipple-sparing mastectomies.

Delayed reconstruction

If immediate reconstruction is not possible or desired, breast reconstruction can also be performed at a later date.

Prophylactic mastectomy with reconstruction

For women with a high genetic risk of breast cancer (e.g., BRCA1/2 mutation), a preventive mastectomy may be advisable. In these cases, we perform a skin-sparing or nipple-preserving mastectomy and combine this directly with reconstruction, either using implants or autologous tissue.

These preventive procedures offer maximum risk reduction while striving for an aesthetically pleasing and natural result.
