Institute for Laboratory Medicine

The Institute of Laboratory Medicine provides the clinics and outpatient departments of the GPR Clinic, as well as various private medical practices, with a wide range of laboratory diagnostic tests, including microbiological and transfusion medicine tests.

The Institute is equipped with high-tech automated analyzers and performs approximately 1,700,000 laboratory tests annually. This averages out to over 4,600 tests per day. High-quality findings and results are a given for us.

Quality

Since 1998, the institute has established a comprehensive quality management system. At the time, it was the first hospital laboratory in Germany to be accredited under DIN EN 45001; it was later reaccredited under DIN EN 17025 and, in 2007, under DIN EN ISO 15189. The laboratory’s technical and analytical competence is regularly reaffirmed by external assessors.

Laboratory work

All laboratory work is focused on providing the best possible patient care. 67% of disease diagnoses are based on laboratory results. Medication adjustments and treatment success are also monitored using laboratory values. For this reason, the laboratory is staffed around the clock and ensures a turnaround time (the time from sample receipt to report issuance) of 30 minutes for emergency tests.

The institute consists of several laboratory areas:

In a clinical chemistry laboratory, various substances are measured in blood, urine, and other bodily fluids. This helps assess the function of vital organs such as the kidneys, liver, and pancreas, among others, and detect metabolic disorders such as diabetes or gout. Drug monitoring—the measurement of drug concentrations in the bloodis routinely used for certain medications to determine the optimal dosage.

In immunology, antibodies are used to diagnose infections and rheumatic diseases, determine vaccine titers, and examine hormone levels.

In the hematology laboratory, blood counts are performed, providing important information for the diagnosis of inflammation, leukemia, or anemia. If a tropical infection, such as malaria, is suspected, the blood is examined under a microscope.

Bleeding or thrombosis tendencies are assessed in the coagulation laboratory, e.g., before a planned surgery or after a thrombosis. Patients on anticoagulant therapy are closely monitored to tailor the treatment to their individual needs.

Molecular biological diagnostics, a modern field of laboratory medicine, has been established at the institute for years. Thanks to its speed and high sensitivity, it is increasingly used in the fight against multidrug-resistant pathogens and in infectious disease diagnostics. An important division of the institute is the blood serology laboratory with the blood bank. In this laboratory, blood groups and blood group antibodies are determined. We can supply our patients with suitable, compatibility-tested blood within minutes.

In themicrobiology laboratory, blood, urine, various fluid samples, and swabs are examined for pathogens. The antibiotic susceptibility of cultured bacteria is tested. In addition to bacteria, patient samples are also tested for pathogenic fungi, parasites, and certain viruses (e.g., the diarrhea-causing norovirus).

As an accredited drinking water testing facility, the institute conducts microbiological drinking water tests in communal facilities, food service establishments, and private households.
Unfortunately, we are currently unable to perform external sampling and drinking water testing for clients outside of the GPR Clinic.
