Specialized Unit for Stroke Patients

The Stroke Unit at GPR Klinikum Rüsselsheim, certified by the German Stroke Society since fall 2014, is a specialized facility for stroke patients. It was established in 2007 and is led by three board-certified neurologists—Dr. Johannes Richter, Dr. Marcel Féchir, and Dr. Paul Samp—who, in addition to caring for stroke patients, also provide care for patients with other neurological conditions. There is a long-standing close collaboration with the Neurology and Psychiatry Medical Center located on the hospital grounds and the physicians working there. In addition, there is close cooperation with the University Medical Center Mainz.

The beds in the Stroke Unit are located adjacent to the rooms of the interdisciplinary intensive care unit. The close spatial and personnel integration with the intensive care unit ensures optimal emergency care even for the most severely affected patients. The Stroke Unit provides high-quality, locally accessible care for stroke patients. In addition to comprehensive diagnostics, thrombolytic therapy (early treatment of patients with medications designed to dissolve a clot in the brain) is a key component of treatment. However, this treatment option can only be successful within the first few hours after a stroke, which is why it is imperative to be admitted to the hospital immediately after the onset of stroke symptoms. Once emergency diagnostics have been completed and appropriate therapeutic measures initiated, patients receive physical, occupational, and speech therapy as early as possible. After typically only a few days in the stroke unit, patients are transferred to a specialized rehabilitation facility. This early and intensive physical therapy plays a significant role in improving neurological deficits in stroke patients.
