II Medical Clinic

At the Second Department of Internal Medicine, led by Chief Physician PD Dr. med. Oliver Koeth and the heads of the divisions of Invasive Cardiology (Rudolf Henrich Theis) and Cardiac Electrophysiology (Dr. Christoph Jahn), the department focuses on treating patients with cardiovascular diseases in addition to general internal medicine conditions.

With 70 beds, the Second Department of Internal Medicine provides inpatient care to approximately 5,500 patients annually; in addition, outpatient appointments are offered during specialized consultation hours.

Focal points of treatment

The Second Department of Internal Medicine focuses on the following areas:

  • Cardiology (heart diseases)
  • Angiology (vascular diseases)
  • Nephrology with Dialysis (Kidney Diseases with Blood Purification Procedures)
  • Internal Medicine Intensive Care
  • Stroke Unit
  • Chest Pain Unit

Invasive cardiology/cardiac catheterization laboratory

Under the direction of Senior Physician Rudolf-Henrich Theis, the cardiac catheterization laboratory plays a central role in the daily work of the Second Department of Internal Medicine. Each year, approximately 1,600 left heart catheterization procedures and around 800 balloon dilations and stent implantations are performed. Intracoronary blood flow measurement (FFR) and optical coherence tomography can be used for a more precise assessment of narrowings (stenoses) in the coronary arteries. The cardiac catheterization laboratory is available 24 hours a day for emergency diagnostics and treatment, particularly for acute myocardial infarction. In addition to the procedures already mentioned, the cardiac catheterization laboratory’s range of services includes right heart catheterization with hemodynamic measurement and shunt diagnosis, myocardial biopsy, closure of the patent foramen ovale (PFO closure), and, in collaboration with other centers, aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Furthermore, atrial appendage closure for stroke prevention (LAA occluder) is offered. The cardiac catheterization laboratory is a facility recognized by the German Society of Cardiology (DKG) for the additional qualification in interventional cardiology.

Rhythmology

Under the direction of Senior Consultant Dr. Christoph Jahn, pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are implanted to treat cardiac arrhythmias and prevent sudden cardiac death. In the treatment of heart failure that is refractory to drug therapy, the use of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices is playing an increasingly important role in improving quality of life. Eligible patients with specific clinical presentations can be protected for several weeks to months with a defibrillator vest. Additionally, so-called loop recorders can be implanted to record ECG episodes in cases of unexplained loss of consciousness (syncope). Every patient can be provided with an optimal pacemaker system (MRI-compatible) tailored to their individual cardiac arrhythmia. Since January 2020, the Micra pacemaker has also been available for implantation. This is the world’s smallest pacemaker, which also requires no electrodes. Patients with atrial fibrillation can be offered pulmonaryvein isolation (PVI) via cryoballoon ablation. The Rhythmology Department is a DGK-recognized center for the additional qualificationin Specialized Rhythmology (subfield: Active Cardiac Rhythm Implants).

Non-invasive cardiologic functional diagnostics

In addition to ECG, Holter monitoring, stress ECG, and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, echocardiography—including stress echocardiography and transesophageal echocardiography—is another key area of focus in the daily clinical practice of the Second Department of Internal Medicine.

Chest Pain Unit (CPU)

In the Chest Pain Unit, patients with acute chest pain undergo diagnostic evaluation as quickly as possible to enable prompt—and often life-saving—treatment.

Intensive care medicine

In our interdisciplinary intensive care unit, which includes an intermediate care unit and a stroke unit, patients with serious medical conditions are treated and monitored. Senior Physician Katherina Auerhammer is in charge of patients with internal medicine conditions. Senior Physician Dr. Johannes Richter heads the stroke unit.
