In July 2012, the range of medical services offered on the grounds of the GPR Clinic was expanded with the addition of a radiation oncology center. This is the second location of Strahlentherapie RheinMainNahe. In February 2010, the first location began operations in Mainz-Hechtsheim; it is headed by Dr. Ute Metzmann. In September 2016, a third location was added in Bad Kreuznach under the direction of Associate Professor Dr. Ralph Mücke.

Focal points of treatment

Therapy

The center is equipped with a state-of-the-art linear accelerator, which enables radiationtreatment to be performed gently and precisely. In addition to conformal radiation therapy, this includes intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT/RapidArc). This allows a high radiation dose to be delivered to the center of the tumor while largely sparing the surrounding tissue. Other techniques include image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), as well as breath-hold radiotherapy and the precise targeting of tumor sites (stereotaxy). Alongside surgery and medical oncology, radiation therapy is a cornerstone of cancer treatment. Today, approximately 60 percent of all cancer patients receive radiation therapy as an essential component of their treatment.

Collaboration

The proximity to the GPR Clinic and its specialized clinics and institutes opens up opportunities for close collaboration. For example, the radiation therapy center cooperates with the oncology department of the First Medical Clinic under the direction of Professor Dr. Dimitri Flieger. By establishing the Radiation Therapy Center on the grounds of the GPR Clinic, people in the region suffering from cancer can now access modern treatment options for this therapy right here on site. Furthermore, combined radio-chemotherapy treatments for patients with advanced cancer can be performed in the inpatient setting close to home in Rüsselsheim.
