Clinic pharmacy and central purchasing

The Hospital Pharmacy and Central Purchasing team supports physicians and nursing staff with a wide range of pharmaceutical and clinical services to ensure that patients at GPR Hospital receive the most appropriate medications or medical devices during their stay. Proper delivery and storage of all medications and medical devices are always a top priority. The hospital pharmacy’s broad and highly diverse range of services is based on three key pillars: pharmaceutical logistics, drug compounding, and clinical-pharmaceutical services.

Focal points of treatment

  • Pharmaceutical Logistics
  • Drug Manufacturing
  • Clinical and Pharmaceutical Services

Pharmaceutical logistics

Approximately 2,000 medications and medical devices are kept in stock at all times, and an additional 15,000 can be procured on short notice. The hospital pharmacy supplies all wards and departments of the GPR Clinic with medications, medical devices, laboratory reagents, and disinfectants. Cost-effectiveness, quality, and safety of medications and medical devices are our top priorities during purchasing, procurement, storage, and dispensing. We ensure this through careful product selection and ongoing market monitoring.

Pharmaceutical production (formulation)

The compounding department develops medications (such as ointments, creams, solutions, nasal sprays, or capsules) and prepares them individually for specific patients. At the same time, however, the large-scale production of medications and skincare products for therapeutic use also plays a significant role. For example, low-dose medications for children are often not available over the counter. For this reason, the hospital pharmacy manufactures low-dose medications for safe use in children, as well as in premature infants and newborns. A specially equipped cleanroom laboratory is available for the patient-specific preparation of cytostatic agents. The hospital pharmacy thus enables effective and patient-specific tumor treatment with highly effective medications in the oncology, urology, and gynecology specialty clinics and guarantees the highest level of product quality and safety of use.

Clinical-pharmaceutical services

Clinical-pharmaceutical services include, among other things, medication information and counseling—including in-person consultations or ward rounds (e.g., antibiotic stewardship)—drug interaction checks upon request, budget monitoring, and ward inspections. Clinical-pharmaceutical services encompass the pharmacy’s wide range of advisory services. They help ensure that patients receive the appropriate medication in the correct dosage and formulation at the right time, and that all users receive optimal information about the product. In addition, advising hospital physicians and nursing teams on the correct medication, as well as educating patients on how to handle their medications, is of particular importance.

For quality assurance, the hospital pharmacy participates in nationwide reporting systems. Unexpected drug interactions and side effects are recorded through this system.

Regular ward inspections are conducted, and all medications and medical devices stocked on the wards are checked for proper storage, adherence to opening periods, and expiration dates, among other factors. This ensures a good flow of information, a safe supply, and compliance with legal regulations.
