Operations

As a certified joint replacement center, our team performs over 1,000 knee and hip replacement surgeries each year.

In addition, we offer open and arthroscopic orthopedic surgeries onthe hip and knee joints, ankle, shoulder, as well as hands and feet. This includes complex realignment surgeries and arthroscopies, which are part of the daily routine for our experienced team of experts.

Rapid Recovery - Get fit again faster

The patient is at the center of the “Rapid Recovery” program and isan active partner in the treatment process. As part of the Rapid Recovery program, our patients participate in our patient education program. This includes an information session (lasting approximately 4 hours) held about 1–2 weeks before your surgery date, during which patients are informed about the entire treatment process and have the opportunity to meet other patients who are also undergoing joint replacement surgery. The sense of community within the group contributes to motivating support. As part of our program to

promote rapid recovery, patients are thoroughly informed about all aspects of their joint replacement and encouraged to actively participate in the recovery process. This intensive training and education is designed to reduce anxiety and thereby enable the best possible treatment outcomes. From the very beginning, you will learn how to positively influence the course of treatment through active participation and thus take responsibility for your own recovery.

The patient education program—“Rapid Recovery”—is also available online as a video (running time: 1 hour and 16 minutes). The video provides information to help patients prepare for an upcoming surgery and serves as a temporary substitute for the in-person information session.

Treatment goals

The goal for our patients:

  • Early mobilization on the day of surgery to ensure the shortest possible hospital stay
  • Rapid rehabilitation and, as a result, a faster return to daily life (Coordination with outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation facilities providing follow-up care is a given.)
  • Minimal blood loss through minimally invasive surgical techniques
  • Greater freedom of movement
  • Higher quality of life

For this reason, many patients can receive follow-up care on an outpatient basis from physical therapists or at a rehabilitation facility very soon after surgery.

There, they undergo intensive physical therapy exercises to help them return to daily life as quickly as possible. Because being active means, above all, staying in motion.

Modern joint replacements and minimally invasive treatments

People with severely damaged joints, for whom conservative treatment methods do not lead to the desired quality of life, can be relieved of their symptoms through modern prostheses and thus enjoy life again. In doing so, we place great emphasis on minimally invasive treatment methods to enable a faster recovery.

Faster Recovery from Hip Surgery Using the AMIS Method

Hip Surgery: The AMIS Method

Patients with severely damaged hip joints and severe hip pain, for example due to osteoarthritis, for whom conservative treatment methods do not lead to the desired quality of life, can be relieved of their symptoms through modern hip joint replacements and thus enjoy life again. At GPR Klinikum, we use minimally invasive surgical techniques such as the innovative AMIS method (Anterior Minimally Invasive Surgery), which is particularly gentle on muscles, tendons, and nerves during the implantation of standard short- and long-stem prostheses.

With the AMIS method, access to the hip joint is gained from the front rather than from the side, as in traditional surgeries. The new hip joint is then inserted naturally between the muscles and tendons, so that the thigh muscles do not need to be extensively detached and the tissue is barely damaged.

As a pioneer in Germany, the orthopedic team led by Chief Physician Dr. Manfred Krieger applies the modern surgical and rehabilitation procedure “Hip in a Day.” Thanks to the AMIS method and the Rapid Recovery program, patients experience less pain and, under certain conditions, are sometimes back on
their feet so quickly that they can go home onthe same day as their hip replacement surgery.

Your benefits at GPR Clinic:

  • Experts with many years of experience in orthopedics, specializing in hip replacement
  • Use of the AMIS method: Minimally invasive surgical techniques
  • Gentle on muscles, tendons, and nerves
  • Quick appointment scheduling
  • Faster recovery

Knee Joints

The human knee joint has a highly sophisticated structure: All joint components interlock precisely, enabling smooth rolling and gliding movements. This allows us to perform everyday activities such as climbing stairs or engaging in sports like cycling. A damaged knee joint makes such movements difficult or impossible, thereby significantly reducing the patient’s quality of life. If conservative treatment methods do not yield the desired results, the damaged parts can be replaced with artificial components. When using modern knee joint prostheses, treatment is tailored to the patient’s individual needs, which we determine at GPR Klinikum through thorough consultations and examinations. Thanks to modern and minimally invasive surgical techniques, patients are typically back on their feet quickly after receiving a stable knee joint prosthesis.

Hip Replacement in a Day - "Hip in a Day"

A new hip in the morning and back home by evening? Thanks to the so-called AMIS method and the Rapid Recovery Program, this is possible. Dr. Manfred Krieger is the first physician in Germany to use the modern surgical and rehabilitation procedure “Hip in a Day.”

The benefits for patients are clear: they recover faster and generally experience less pain.

Hip in a Day in the Media

The media is also very interested in the AMIS procedure, first used in Germany by Dr. Manfred Krieger in 2017, and the Rapid Recovery Program. In November 2019, Dr. Krieger performed Europe’s first outpatient bilateral hip replacement surgery. Thanks to optimal patient preparation, modern minimally invasive surgical techniques, and immediate mobilization, the 44-year-old patient was able to leave the clinic on the same day as the surgery. With this, Dr. Krieger—who has already performed over 100 outpatient unilateral hip replacements—has successfully opened a new chapter in the history of hip joint surgery. RTL Hessen aired a report on this successful operation.

Hip in a Day: Podcast Episode

Chief Physician Dr. Manfred Krieger was a guest on an episode of the ORTHOpress podcast "Das hört sich gesund an" (That Sounds Healthy). The nearly 20-minute episode focuses on short-stay hip replacement surgery, which Dr. Krieger calls "Hip in a Day," as well as the rapid rehabilitation following joint replacement ("Rapid Recovery") practiced at the GPR.

"My New Joint": A Free Guide with Expert Advice

"My New Joint" is a guide for recipients of hip and knee replacements. Thanks to modern methods of joint replacement surgery, nearly all patients can now become pain-free and regain near-normal mobility. Approximately 200,000 hip joints and 180,000 knee joints are implanted in Germany each year. There are now a wide variety of different models that can be individually tailored to the patient’s specific needs. But that’s not all: Preoperative patient education and proper postoperative care are also becoming increasingly important. In their guide, joint specialists Dr. Manfred Krieger and Ralf Dörrhöfer take patients by the hand and prepare them as best as possible for life with an artificial joint—regardless of the chosen prosthesis or surgical method.
