General, visceral and thoracic surgery
The Department of General, Visceral, and Thoracic Surgery has 30 beds and is responsible for the surgical treatment of diseases of the internal organs and soft tissues.
These include
- the abdominal organs (visceral surgery)
- the organs of the chest cavity (thoracic surgery)
- the thyroid and parathyroid glands (endocrine surgery)
- the abdominal wall, including abdominal wall hernias (hernia surgery)
- the skin and subcutaneous tissue (soft tissue surgery)
- The rectum (coloproctology)
We are able to perform the majority of procedures in general, visceral, and thoracic surgery using minimally invasive techniques (“keyhole surgery”). This results in minimal surgical trauma, reduced pain, and a shorter hospital stay. With the introduction of robotic surgery, our department’s range of state-of-the-art surgical techniques has been fully expanded. This allows surgeries to be performed with even greater precision and in a way that is gentler on the patient.

Colorectal cancer
In most cases, colorectal cancer can only be cured through surgery. We place great emphasis on total mesorectal excision (TME) and complete mesocolic excision (CME). With these surgical techniques, the tumor and its associated lymph nodes are completely removed within the natural layers of the bowel. These layers act as a natural barrier against tumor cells, thereby significantly reducing the risk of tumor regrowth (recurrence). Patients with cancer are reviewed by our interdisciplinary tumor board before and/or after surgery to determine a holistic and individually tailored treatment plan, such as preoperative radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy.
At the Colorectal Cancer Center, patient care is provided in collaboration with the relevant medical specialty clinics at GPR Klinikum. If necessary, stoma therapy, psycho-oncology, specialized oncology nursing, etc., are consulted. Post-treatment follow-up care is coordinated together with primary care physicians and family members.
Hernia surgery
When performing surgery for inguinal hernias and abdominal wall hernias, we select the procedure that best suits the patient, their circumstances, and their preferences from a wide range of options. We are registered as a hernia center through our participation in a nationwide hernia study (long-term follow-up after hernia surgery).
Coloproctology (surgery of the colon and rectum)
Coloproctology focuses on the treatment of conditions affecting the large intestine, the rectum, and the pelvic floor. These include anal vein thrombosis, marisks, hemorrhoids, fissures, abscesses, and fistulas. Of particular note is the use of rectal endosonography (“internal ultrasound”) for advanced diagnostics of benign and malignant diseases of the rectum. In addition, we offer the modern technique of digital anoscopy for the early detection of malignant diseases of the anal canal and their precursors.
Endocrine surgery (thyroid and parathyroid surgery)
Intraoperative neuromonitoring is used to assist in the surgical treatment (including via small incisions) of benign and malignant thyroid and parathyroid conditions. This significantly reduces the risk of damage to the vocal cord nerves. Thanks to our specialized laparoscopic expertise, we are also able to remove adrenal tumors from the retroperitoneal space.
Thoracic surgery
In thoracic surgery, all inflammatory and malignant diseases of the lungs are diagnosed and treated surgically, either through an open incision in the chest or using minimally invasive techniques. This includes, among other things, the treatment of lung cancer, pneumothorax, and pleural diseases.
Surgery of the upper gastrointestinal tract
We offer a range of surgical options for the treatment of tumors of the colon, stomach, liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts; laparoscopic surgery is frequently performed. All gallbladder conditions are treated laparoscopically, as are benign stomach tumors and bowel resections for diverticular disease.
The treatment plan is determined prior to the start of therapy during our weekly interdisciplinary tumor board meeting. In doing so, we strictly adhere to the relevant guidelines of the professional societies, while also taking into account the individual characteristics of each patient. Most surgeries are performed using the “keyhole technique,” but “open surgery” continues to play an important role.
Reflux (heartburn)
For many years, we have been treating patients with reflux, esophageal motility disorders (achalasia), and delayed gastric emptying. In collaboration with Medical Clinic I (Gastroenterology), we refer patients for highly specialized diagnostic testing and, if necessary, endoscopic or surgical treatment.
Our range of surgical services includes, among others:
- Fundoplication
- Hiatal repair (with and without mesh reinforcement)
- Fundophrenicopexy
- Gastric resection / gastrectomy
- Merendino procedure
We discuss complex cases in our interdisciplinary visceral medicine board to achieve the best possible outcome for our patients.
Interdisciplinary Abdominal Center
Patients who are admitted to our hospital as emergency cases with unexplained abdominal pain are typically admitted to a specialized ward (Abdominal Center). Here, joint rounds are conducted twice daily by senior physicians and residents from the departments of Visceral Surgery and Gastroenterology (First Department of Internal Medicine).
