Geriatric clinic
Geriatrics deals with the diagnosis and treatment—which may also include rehabilitation—of diseases in older adults. The primary goal is to prevent impending permanent disabilities or, at the very least, to alleviate their effects. The aim is to help patients regain as high a degree of independence as possible.
Typical conditions treated in geriatrics include stroke, Parkinson’s disease, follow-up care after fractures or amputations, delayed recovery (convalescence) following a serious illness, pain associated with advanced osteoporosis, and degenerative spinal changes. The Geriatric Clinic has 40 beds.

Focal points of treatment
- Stroke
- Parkinson's disease
- Follow-up care after fractures or amputations
- Delayed recovery after a serious illness
- Pain associated with advanced osteoporosis
- Degenerative spinal changes
Diagnostics and therapy
In addition to diagnostics and treatment, the medical staff is responsible for coordinating and organizing therapies from various departments. They also conduct functional assessments of patients, which serve as the basis for prescribing appropriate therapies.
Care is provided by professionals in both general nursing and geriatric care. This is active care, meaning that patients’ existing abilities are to be incorporated and promoted. To achieve the greatest possible independence for patients, other professional groups are involved depending on the clinical picture:
Speech therapy
Speech-language pathology focuses on therapy, counseling, and diagnosis for language, speech, voice, and swallowing disorders, such as those resulting from a stroke or Parkinson's disease.
Nutritional advice
Nutrition counseling is available, for example, for conditions such as osteoporosis and metabolic disorders.
Physiotherapy and physical therapy
One of our patients’ goals is to be able to move around independently again with as little pain as possible. Physical therapy and physiotherapy offer support and assistance through
- individual therapy, including neurophysiological approaches
- group therapy
- Massage, heat and cold therapy, lymphatic drainage, electrotherapy
- Exercise therapy in water
- Advice on selecting assistive devices and training in their use
- Guidance for family members
Occupational therapy
Occupational therapists provide specific guidance for daily life at home and support patients as they work toward independence.
The therapy includes
- Exercises to improve self-care skills, mobility, and manual dexterity
- Training in personal self-care, e.g., practicing personal hygiene, dressing and undressing, etc.
- Treatment of neuropsychological disorders
- Counseling—including for family members—regarding potential home modifications or assistive device adaptations, as well as training in the use of assistive devices
Psychology
One area of focus is the diagnosis and treatment of neuropsychological disorders (perceptual disorders, apraxia, etc.) following a stroke. In addition, the psychology department offers assistance with coping with illness, as well as the diagnosis and treatment of depression and cognitive impairments (dementia).
Social service
Unfortunately, illnesses do not always pass without consequences. Our social services department therefore offers counseling and support in many areas, such as assistance with home care—for example, “Meals on Wheels,” home health care, home emergency response systems, applying for long-term care insurance, arranging short-term care or admission to a nursing home—as well as assistance with obtaining assistive devices.

Referral by the family doctor
Like (almost) all geriatric units in Hesse, the Geriatric Clinic at GPR Klinikum is a hospital department. This means that, unlike at rehabilitation clinics, for example, no application to the health insurance provider or corresponding cost approval is required prior to the patient’s admission.
Patients who are already at the GPR Clinic are transferred to the Geriatric Clinic after consultation. As a primary care physician, you can refer your patients who require hospital treatment for acute geriatric care using the appropriate registration form, which you can also obtain from our administrative office. We will contact you promptly to discuss a possible admission for the patient.
The Geriatric Clinic requests that you submit awritten referral for the patient
