Successful MRI upgrade at the GPR Clinic: modern AI technology improves image quality and diagnostic reliability

The Institute of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at the GPR Clinic has successfully completed a comprehensive technical upgrade of its magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. With this new expansion stage, the GPR Klinikum is one of the first medical facilities in Germany to use this modern, AI-supported technology in everyday clinical practice.

At the heart of the upgrade is a new generation of software called SmartSpeed Precise. This software uses artificial intelligence (AI) in two ways to process the raw data from MRI scans particularly efficiently: one AI module reduces noise, while a second ensures sharper details in the images. This results in significantly clearer and more informative images than with conventional methods—even with the same scan time. At the same time, the MRI software can complete some scans faster or operate at higher resolution without compromising diagnostic reliability. For patients, this means better images and reliable diagnoses—and for the radiology team, it means optimized workflows and an MRI operation that is technically well-positioned for the years ahead.

“The new AI-supported reconstruction stage enables us to visualize finer structures much more clearly without compromising diagnostic accuracy,” explains Dr. Thilo Gerhards, Chief Physician at the Institute of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. “We are currently seeing a major qualitative improvement, particularly in musculoskeletal imaging. This benefits our patients as well as the treating physicians.”

Many standard examinations of other body regions, such as the prostate, also benefit from clearer, more detailed images. The new technology is deliberately not designed for maximum time savings, but rather for a balanced interplay of image quality, resolution, and efficient workflow. It thus supports both high diagnostic accuracy and a stable clinical workflow. Over the past few weeks, examination procedures have been carefully adapted and optimized. MRI operations are now back to normal—with the benefits of the new AI technology running in the background.

In addition, the MRI at GPR Klinikum features an integrated multimedia system that makes the examination significantly more comfortable for patients. During the examination, soothing landscape images can be displayed and music played. This visual and auditory accompaniment helps many people relax and perceive the examination situation as less stressful. Combined with the partially reduced scan times made possible by the new AI technology, MRI diagnostics at the GPR Clinic are thus becoming step by step more comfortable and patient-friendly.

“With this investment, we are specifically strengthening the medical quality and future viability of our hospital,” emphasizes Achim Neyer, GPR Managing Director. “The fact that we are among the first facilities in Germany to use this technology in routine practice underscores our commitment to providing high-quality modern medicine for the region.”
