Clinic for Pulmonary and Bronchial Medicine
Dr. Christian von Mallinckrodt and Dr. Torsten Born head the Department of Pulmonary and Bronchial Medicine, which has a total of 17 beds, as well as an affiliated medical practice—the Rhein-Main Pulmonary Center. In addition to meeting all the standards of high-quality medical care, the modern ward also offers a high level of comfort and a “feel-good atmosphere” for patients to facilitate a speedy recovery. Dr. von Mallinckrodt and Dr. Born are specialists in internal medicine with a focus on pulmonary and bronchial medicine.
Thanks to the clinic’s excellent equipment and the shared use of the specialist practice’s state-of-the-art equipment, the Clinic for Pulmonary and Bronchial Medicine is able to diagnose and treat all conditions affecting the lungs and bronchi.

Focal points of treatment
- Bronchoscopies
- Ergospirometry
- Treatment of COPD and bronchial asthma
- Endoscopic lung volume reduction
- Tumors of the thoracic organs
- Sleep-related breathing disorders
Treatment procedure
In addition to lung function tests and allergy tests, Dr. von Mallinckrodt or Dr. Born perform procedures such as bronchoscopies (examination using a special instrument called a bronchoscope). This procedure allows, among other things, for the detection of abnormal bronchial tissue (such as in cases of lung cancer) and enables the collection of a biopsy sample if necessary. The subsequent laboratory analysis can, among other things, reveal whether malignant cells are present in the tissue.
Another service offered is ergospirometry, which is considered the most accurate method for assessing the performance of the heart and lungs (“cardiorespiratory system”). In addition to ECG and blood pressure, this procedure measures ventilation under stress while simultaneously analyzing the O2 and CO2 concentrations in the exhaled air. In this way, overall metabolism and respiration can be assessed as the workload increases. This method is also used, among other things, in sports medicine performance diagnostics.
Pulmonary and bronchial medicine
With its range of therapeutic services, the clinic meets all the essential requirements of modern pulmonology. These include, among others, the treatment of bronchial asthma, COPD, and other obstructive lung diseases; inflammatory systemic lung diseases; pulmonary fibrosis (destruction of lung tissue and associated functional limitations); as well as other allergy-related conditions of the lungs and bronchi (such as fungal infection of the lungs).
A key focus is endoscopic lung volume reduction, an endoscopic procedure that is successfully used in patients with advanced pulmonary emphysema (overinflation of the lungs and destruction of the alveoli) and generally leads to improved exercise tolerance.
Interdisciplinary medical care
The integration of the specialist clinic into the GPR Clinic ensures that, for certain pulmonary conditions, patients can receive multidisciplinary care in collaboration with the other clinics within the facility. This occurs, for example, following a diagnosis of sarcoidosis, pulmonary hypertension, or bronchial carcinoma (lung cancer). These conditions require interdisciplinary specialist care involving cardiology, oncology, and gastroenterology—depending on the condition, surgical specialties may also be involved. This applies, for example, to the diagnosis of tumor diseases and surgical treatment of thoracic organs. Another example would be surgical co-treatment for pulmonary emphysema, where large air pockets can impair respiratory function. Through a procedure known as reduction surgery, improved lung ventilation can be achieved.
All about the patient
Taking personal responsibility for managing a medical condition, developing an understanding of one’s own symptoms, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and consistently adhering to medication regimens and treatment plans all play a major role in a patient’s recovery.
In collaboration with the GPR Clinic, the affiliated physicians offer training sessions at their practice to help patients manage their conditions. In addition to nicotine cessation courses, the program includes asthma and COPD training sessions, which cover topics such as how to handle emergency situations.
Furthermore, check-ups and training sessions are offered for sleep-related breathing disorders. In addition to providing careful medical treatment for patients, the two pulmonologists place particular emphasis on providing compassionate care for all their concerns and problems. Consequently, the treatment of oncology patients is also a top priority for them.
